a question of ethics
on wednesday night i chatted with a Christian friend of mine who is a youth worker. we were talking about a proposed "youth work code of practice" being proposed by the Youth Affairs Council for Victoria YACVic
he said that he believes that christians do not need training or a code of ethics to be youth workers. i said we did. what do you think?
are christians above the rest of our peers when it comes to services?

Hey SOT
I think the history of various kinds of abuse at the hands of the church is evidence enough that Christians absolutely need to be subject to a code of ethics.

i agree whole heartedly Steve! i think that it is people with such a narrow view of what Christianity is that get US as Christians into trouble.
we only have to look at how many paedophiles have used church based groups as a 'easy' target. i do not understand how people can believe that we as christians do not need to live above the norm!

Why would Christians be exempt from a code of ethics? I certainly think followers of Christ should be subject to this just as society as a whole is.

Yeah as a youth worker and a disciple of Christ, I feel that even if a 'Christian' is a youth worker that doesn't make them exempt from having a different code of ethics as the next person. The word Christian presumes a level of arrived ness, which is ridiculous, so just to say my young people are in the hands of Christians doesn't make them 'safe' who ever that 'Christian' is could have a plethora of ideas that aren't kosher with me and my values. I think to have a forum where you can explore codes of ethics for youth workers is a very valid thing; and not just for youth workers outside of Christian organisations.

NO way!!! That's is so dangerious! That just means people can do things in the name of God that offend/hurt/damage others and be exempt from reproach. That's so dangerous! Of course we need training and benchmarks etc. We are still humans who are very capable of making mistakes!
